DEFINING REALITY

We generally perceive our world using the senses of sight, sound, smell, touch, taste and sound.

The image to the right is an unaltered photograph of clouds over the Sandia Mountains at El Cerro in Los Lunas, NM.

In addition to these five basic physical senses, we possess more such as our inner (gut) feelings or unanticipated emotional responses to something.

Mother's intuition falls within this experience.

Most people seem to take for granted that mothers possess this gift just by being mothers, but what SENSES are open when we have a 'feeling' about one of our children?

Have you ever  smelled something that you realize is not in your immediate environment? Maybe a scent reminds you of someone, or of a place you have visited, or of an experience long ago. I have always been one who questions everything and strives to find rational explanations, but I have learned this is not always the case, which doesn't mean to overlook or ignore, sometimes it is actually pushing us to pay attention and not write things off.

In studio drawing courses, which I taught for several years, we worked with positive and negative shapes.

The negative, or 'empty' shapes between objects define the objects themselves. The spaces form shapes just as the objects do, and by focusing on drawing the shapes of the spaces between objects, students do really well in depicting things accurately as they appear in the physical world. So, by seeing what is  NOT there, you can accurately efine what is.This concept comes into play at times in our perceptions of things beyond art, Just stretch your mind a little and you will see this!
